I am a big fan of Phoenix Theatre, and left this cringe worthy show at intermission. I was excited to see a Broadway aimed show telling an Arizona dreamer’s story. The cast, musicians, set, lighting, sound, and choreography were all superb. That’s were my compliments end. The show was overly derivative, heavy handed, and played on stereotypes and tropes. In a failed attempt at being inspired and earnest Americano was unbearably cheesy. Barnard and Rose were the absolute wrong choices to tell dreamer Antonio Valdovino’s important story. Phoenix Theatre has so much to offer and it’s disappointing that so much time, hype, and funding were invested in this production.
